KUNSTVEREIN LEVERKUSEN Schloss Morsbroich e.V. JAHRESGABEN

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY MASK, 2020

Object assemblage, 51 x 42 x 5 cm (Unique piece)

Digital photo work, 47,5 x 38,5 cm, Fine Art Print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag

Glazed insect box, silk chiffon ribbons, insect pins

At the centre of the object assemblage is a digital photographic work printed on particularly matte photographic paper, created as a one-off from a hand drawing made with coloured pencils and eye shadow pigment. It is fixed in a glass insect box with insect pins and surrounded by pastel-coloured silk chiffon ribbons. It is no coincidence that both what is depicted in the photograph and the arrangement of the details in the box are reminiscent of butterflies, their (preservative) storage and their state of eternal sleep in a display case. In the installation TABLESCAPES, 2023, Kunstverein Leverkusen Schloss Morsbroich e.V. / Room Set 1 / The Lightroom, a large-format photographic work of the same name was installed, which shows the same motif but differs in terms of the materiality and the format used.

THE BETH SHORT CUTOUT, 2020

Lasercuts made of forex in sleeves handmade of rayon filament and wool felt

  Multiple / each size 10 / 1 A.P., num. & sign.

Sizes: S – 25×25 cm, p. 32×32 cm, M – 30×30 cm, p. 37×37 cm, L – 39×39 cm, p. 46×46 cm

The three-dimensional multiple object was created from a digitally processed photographic image (found footage/meme) and its conversion into a file with a cutting contour as a machine laser cut from the plastic material Forex (hard foam board) in three size formats. The image depicts ELIZABETH „BETH“ SHORT aka THE BLACK DAHLIA (1924-1947), an American whose young life was brutally ended by an extremely violent crime (femicide). In the installation B.D. *** Memorial For *** E.S., 2020, artothek – Raum für junge Kunst, Cologne, this theme was adequately realised and continued through complementary works in the installation TABLESCAPES, 2023, Kunstverein Leverkusen Schloss Morsbroich e.V. / Roomset 2 / The Darkroom: In this context, a large wall arrangement consisting of six Beth Short Cutouts was installed. In terms of the way the object is presented, there is a certain similarity to the other pop icon who was much better known to the mainstream after Short’s lifetime: Marilyn Monroe. It is obvious and possible to read Beth Short as a „character meme“1 of a „Dark Marilyn“.

Characteristics of memes1 include their susceptibility to parody, their use of intertextuality, their viral spread, and their evolution over time.
